Scientist invents ‘robot’ that kills Ebola virus on

By Sola Ogundipe RECENTLY, in effort to eliminate Ebola at the source, through use of innovative disinfection technology, two “germ-killing robots”  were deployed from the US to the JFK Hospital and ELWA Hospital both in Monrovia, Republic of Liberia, both hotspots of the Ebola disease outbreak. The robots, technically known as TRU-D SmartUVC, were used to disinfect health care environments where Ebola patients are being treated. Good Health Weekly gathered that TRU-D is the only portable UV disinfection device on the market with Sensor360 technology, which calculates the time needed to react to room variables such as size, geometry, surface reflectivity and the amount and location of equipment in the room and effectively deliver a lethal dose of UV-C light during a single cycle from a single, central location in the room. Ultraviolet light “It works by generating ultraviolet light energy that modifies the DNA structure of viral pathogens, like Ebola, so that ...

One-Third of Professionals Write Poorly. Don't Be One of Them.

HBR Guide to Better Business WritingDoes writing for an audience of senior managers or key stakeholders get your heart pounding—in a bad way? Do you stare at your blank screen for several painful minutes, type in a few words, delete them, type a few more, delete again, and then go refill your coffee? Do your reports meander and raise more questions than they answer? When you send e-mails to colleagues, do your messages disappear into a void, never to be read, or acted on?Many of us fumble for the right words and tone when we write, even if we're confident and articulate when we speak. But it doesn't have to be that way. Good business writing is a skill you must cultivate to succeed: you'll lose time, money, and influence if your e-mails, proposals, and other important documents fail to win people over. The HBR Guide to Better Business Writing, by writing expert Bryan A. Garner, gives you the tools you need to express your ideas clearly and persuasively so clients, colleagues...

Managing Ebola Will Take Powerful Communication

by CHRISTOPHER GRAVES Comments (4) | August 8, 2014 Whether the world’s scariest outbreak of Ebola can be managed may come down to communications. Can governments, NGOs, and doctors communicate with very different audiences – with accuracy, agility, and ingenuity? Can they be convincing? After years of civil war, many people in the affected countries don’t trust their governments or the foreigners in bio- hazard suits who seem to bring the virus with them. They don’t understand how the virus is being spread. Local custom is to bathe the bodies of the dead – but in doing so, the living catch the virus. Traditional sources of food – wild animals – also carry the virus. Think of the tough barriers that messaging must get through to stop this outbreak: don’t eat the animals you have always eaten in the past; don’t touch your loved ones if they are ill; don’t follow age-old or religious customs in washing a...

Don’t Be Afraid to Negotiate with Someone More Powerful

It can be daunting to ask your boss for a new assignment or to try to land a deal with a major client. But you can succeed if you approach the negotiation in the right way. Don't let fear of the competition cloud your judgment. Often, if other candidates are being interviewed or six vendors are vying for the contract, we’re tempted to lower our demands. Don’t decrease your value — think about the skills and expertise you bring to the table that others do not. To conquer your fear, the most important thing is to be well-prepared. Make a list of what you want from the negotiation and why, and then study your counterpart's motivations, obstacles, and goals, so you can brainstorm creative solutions that will work for both of you. Find data to help you make your case, and build trust by listening and asking questions. All of this will help you keep your cool.  Adapted from “ How to Negotiate with Someone More Powerful than You" by Carolyn O'Hara.
